Summer is a time for beach days and sunshine-filled adventures. But the intense sun, salty ocean, and dry winds can wreak havoc on your hair, and your colour!
Maintaining healthy, shiny hair through summer requires a combination of the right care, protective practices, and nourishing treatments.
Here’s my top tips for keeping your hair healthy during summer…
Shield Your Hair from UV Rays
Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the harsh Australian sun.
Prolonged UV exposure can dry out your hair, weaken strands, and fade colour-treated hair.
Always wear a hat and use a leave-in conditioner or treatment with SPF to protect your locks from UV damage, my favourite is YOUNG.AGAIN by Kevin.Murphy
Protect Your Hair at the Beach or Pool
Rinse your hair with fresh water before swimming; think of your hair as a sponge.
Wet hair will absorb less salt and chlorine. If you are swimming in chlorine it’s really important to apply a protective oil or leave-in conditioner to create a barrier and always rinse thoroughly after swimming!
Use a gentle, clarifying shampoo to remove any residue. (No one wants Chlorine green hair) I like K18 Detox shampoo and Christophe Robin Purifying shampoo.
Avoid Overwashing
Washing your hair too frequently strips it of natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy. During summer, your scalp may produce more sweat, but over-washing isn’t the answer.
Try to limit washing your hair to 2–3 times a week. Use dry shampoo between washes to absorb excess oil.
Eat a Hair-Healthy Diet

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
The summer heat and salty water can dehydrate your hair, leaving it brittle and prone to breakage. Hydration is key to maintaining elasticity and shine.
Summer is a great time to switch over to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner. And to do a weekly deep-conditioning treatment or hair mask to replenish lost moisture.
Combat Frizz
Humidity causes the cuticle layer of the hair to swell and frizz, making your hair look unmanageable.

Switch to a microfiber towel to dry your hair; it’s gentler and reduces frizz and sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimize friction and keep your hair smooth.

Frequent heat styling can further damage your hair during the summer. Opt for low- maintenance, protective hairstyles. Embrace your natural curl!
And while we all love a slick bun, try to avoid super tight hairstyles. These can stress your hair and scalp, especially when your hair is wet.
